Brickyard Magic: Bubba, Dale Jr., and Race Day Vibes in Indianapolis
There’s just something legendary about Indianapolis Motor Speedway — the roar of engines, the smell of rubber on asphalt, and that sense of history hanging in the air. This year’s Brickyard 400 delivered every bit of that magic and more. From walking the famous track to spotting Dale Earnhardt Jr. live in action, and witnessing Bubba Wallace take the checkered flag, this race day was one for the books.
Oh — and did we mention Cookie Monster was the Grand Marshal?
Yes, really. Let’s get into it.
🏁 The Track Walk: Standing Where Legends Have Rolled
We kicked off race day the best way possible: walking the track. There’s nothing like standing on the very surface that has seen so many NASCAR and IndyCar legends make history. It hits different when you're actually on the straightaway, looking down the yard of bricks and feeling the energy of the place.
The weather was hot, spirits were high, and the pre-race excitement was in full swing. You could feel the build-up in the air — the buzz of the crowd, pit crews gearing up, and fans from every corner of the country decked out in their favorite driver’s gear.
🎤 A Wild Moment: Seeing Dale Earnhardt Jr. On-Air
Right before the race started, we got to catch Dale Earnhardt Jr. just as he appeared for his live broadcast. Seeing him up close — headset on, focused, charismatic as ever — was surreal. For lifelong fans, Dale Jr. is the face of NASCAR legacy, and watching him work the mic in real time was like getting a behind-the-scenes glimpse into racing royalty.
It was a reminder of how far the sport has come, and how much Dale Jr. still means to fans, even off the track.
🏆 Bubba Wallace Takes the Win
The race itself? Incredible. Edge-of-your-seat excitement from start to finish. After a hard-fought battle, it was Bubba Wallace who claimed victory at the Brickyard 400 — a win that lit up the stands and felt genuinely electric.
🍪 Cookie Monster, Grand Marshal Extraordinaire
Because every epic race needs a little surprise… Cookie Monster showed up as the Grand Marshal. Yes, the actual Cookie Monster. He waved the green flag, riled up the fans, and proved that sometimes race day magic comes in blue fur with googly eyes.
Kids loved it. Adults loved it. Honestly, it was the lighthearted moment we didn’t know we needed.
🍽️ Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen & The Number 8 Special
After the roar of the engines faded and the sun started to dip, we wrapped up the perfect day with dinner at Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen.
We dove into warm, massive entrees, and those legendary Cheddar’s onion rings — comfort food after a high-octane day. We were tired, sun-kissed, and still buzzing from the experience.
🏁 Final Thoughts: Racing, Legends & Pure Joy
The Brickyard 400 is more than just a race — it’s a celebration of speed, legacy, and community. From the roar of the crowd to the thrill of the track walk, spotting Dale Jr., watching Bubba take the win, and ending the night laughing over dinner — this was one of those days that captures everything we love about race weekends.
Here’s to more race days, more wins, more surprise Grand Marshals, and maybe… just maybe… more “Number 8 Specials” in the future.
See you at the next track. Until then — keep it fast, keep it loud, and keep it fun. 🏎️💨

Fall Creek Falls TN
Waterfalls, Ice Cream & Scenic Views: Our Adventure at Fall Creek Falls State Park
If you're looking for a Tennessee getaway that checks all the boxes — stunning waterfalls, peaceful hikes, cozy camping, and a little ice cream to top it all off — look no further than Fall Creek Falls State Park. We recently spent a few days exploring everything this incredible park has to offer, made a side trip to Rock Island State Park, and even squeezed in a visit to one of the most unexpected highlights of the trip — the Lodge Cast Iron Museum in South Pittsburg, TN.
Whether you're a seasoned camper or just someone who loves soaking up natural beauty (and great food), here’s a look at our unforgettable visit.
🥾 Hikes & Scenic Overlooks: Exploring the Heart of the Park
We hit some of the park’s most iconic trails and overlooks:
-
Paw Paw Trail – Peaceful, wooded, and a great warm-up loop
-
Scenic Loop Drive – A must for those wanting quick access to top views
-
Big Falls Overlook – The jaw-dropping star of the show
-
Piney Falls Overlook – A quieter, stunning view of another cascade
-
Buzzard’s Roost – A dramatic overlook perfect for photos
-
The Cascades – Serene and picture-perfect
These stops offered the perfect mix of effort, beauty, and wow-factor. The fall colors were just starting to turn, and the cooler temps made hiking a dream.
🏕️ Camping at Loop B – Sites 111 & 123
We camped in Loop B, starting at Site 111, then moving to 123. Both sites were shaded, peaceful, and had that cozy, tucked-into-nature feel that makes camping at Fall Creek Falls so special. Campfires, quiet mornings, and starry skies — it doesn’t get much better.
🏨 Hotel Tour & Renovations
While we didn’t stay overnight, we did stop by the newly renovated Fall Creek Falls Lodge. It’s sleek, modern, and still manages to feel rustic and warm. With stunning views of the lake and a comfortable lodge-style atmosphere, it’s the perfect upgrade option for those who want nature without the tent.
🍴 Food Highlights: From Southern Comfort to Sweet Treats
-
Dinner at the lodge’s restaurant was better than expected — hearty portions, friendly service, and a peaceful setting
-
Daily ice cream runs to the concession stand became a tradition — because what's camping without dessert?
-
And yes… we swam at the park pool before every ice cream session to earn it!
🛍️ Village & Visitor Center
The Village area and Visitor Center were a great midday stop to grab souvenirs, snacks, and learn more about the park’s history. It’s well-kept and staffed by friendly folks who love the area.
🌄 Side Trip: Rock Island State Park
We also took a scenic drive to Rock Island State Park, and it blew us away. The overlooks here are absolutely stunning, especially where the rivers cut through the gorge. It's quieter than Fall Creek Falls, and well worth the detour if you love dramatic natural beauty.
🍳 Bonus Stop: Lodge Cast Iron Museum – South Pittsburg, TN
On our way home, we made a foodie-history detour to South Pittsburg to visit the Lodge Cast Iron Museum — and if you're even slightly into cooking or cast iron, this place is a gem.
Located right next to the Lodge foundry, the museum is an interactive, beautifully curated space that tells the story of America’s cast iron legacy — from blacksmithing roots to modern kitchen staples. There's vintage cookware, a behind-the-scenes look at how it's made, and of course, an awesome gift shop with exclusive pieces and gear.
It was the perfect way to end the trip — tying together our love for camping, cooking, and good old-fashioned craftsmanship. Highly recommend adding this stop if you’re passing through.
🌲 Final Thoughts
This trip had it all: hikes, waterfalls, mountain views, cold swims, hot meals, sweet treats, campfires, and cast iron cookware. Fall Creek Falls continues to be one of our favorite places in Tennessee, and with bonus adventures like Rock Island State Park and the Lodge Museum, it turned into more than just a camping trip — it became a full-blown fall experience.
We left feeling refreshed, full of gratitude, and — let’s be honest — a little sad to pack up. But that’s how you know it was a good trip.
Until next time — stay adventurous, stay curious, and never skip the ice cream.

Camping at Forbes Lake in Kinmundy, Illinois: Our Adventure in a Converted Trailer
Hey y'all, After our hiccup with the previous blog, I’m thrilled to share one of our most memorable adventures: camping at Forbes Lake in Kinmundy, Illinois. This trip was particularly exciting because we took in a converted trailer, which truly made for a unique and cozy experience.
Getting There
The journey to Forbes Lake was smooth and a short trip for us. Driving through the countryside, we couldn’t help but admire the lush green fields and charming farms. As we approached the lake, the excitement in the air was palpable!
Setting Up Camp
Upon arrival, we quickly found our spot and set up camp. The converted trailer was perfect for this kind of trip. With our comfortable king-sized blow-up mattress and a quaint little kitchen, it felt like a home away from home. We decked it out with some cozy blankets and our favorite camping gear, creating a warm and inviting space.
Exploring Forbes Lake
Forbes Lake is a hidden gem! The water was shimmering under the sun, and the surrounding nature was simply breathtaking. We spent the afternoons hiking the trails, taking in the sights and sounds of the vibrant wildlife. The peaceful ambiance of the lake was the perfect backdrop for relaxation and reflection.
Fishing and Fun
Of course, the highlight for us was fishing. We cast our lines early in the morning and, to our delight, caught a few decent-sized bass! We had some delicious meals right at our campsite, complete with s’mores for dessert!
Evenings Under the Stars
As the sun set, the lake transformed into a magical evening setting. We gathered around the campfire, sharing stories and laughter. The stars were brighter than we’d ever seen, twinkling like diamonds scattered across the night sky. It was moments like these that reminded us of the beauty of nature and the joy of being together.
Final Thoughts
Camping at Forbes Lake was more than just a getaway; it was a chance to reconnect with nature and each other. Our converted trailer provided the perfect blend of adventure and comfort, allowing us to enjoy the great outdoors without sacrificing the little comforts we love. We left with our hearts full and our memories rich, already dreaming of our next adventure.

Benton IL
A Day at the Races: Memorial Day Weekend in Benton, IL
Memorial Day weekend is always a great time to kick off summer — warm weather, cold drinks, and gathering with good people. But this year, we took it up a notch with a trip to the drag strip in Benton, IL for a day at the races that we won’t forget anytime soon. The roar of engines, the smell of burnt rubber, and the sound of cheering fans made for one electric atmosphere.
But what really made this weekend extra special? It was Ryker’s first race!
🏁 Fast Cars, Loud Engines, and Full Bleachers
There’s something about a small-town drag strip that brings people together. From seasoned race teams to families in lawn chairs, everyone’s there for the thrill. I 57 Raceway came alive with the pulse of horsepower and competition. The sun was out, the stands were buzzing, and every race had the crowd on edge.
We watched everything from classic muscle cars to souped-up imports line up and take their shot. The launches were wild and the vibe was pure Americana.
🧢 Ryker’s First Race Day
Watching the races was fun — but watching Ryker experience it for the first time? That was the highlight. Eyes wide, ear protection on, and a smile that just wouldn’t quit. He soaked it all in like a pro: the speed, the sounds, the cars rolling past with engines growling.
There’s something about seeing a kid fall in love with racing for the first time that takes you back to your own first experience at the track. For Ryker, this wasn’t just a day out — it was a rite of passage.
👨👩👧👦 Good Times with Great Friends
As much fun as the racing was, the real joy was in the people. We spent the day laughing, catching up, swapping stories, and sharing snacks under the shade of a pop-up canopy. It felt like a reunion and a party all rolled into one.
Coolers were full, chairs were circled, and everyone just kicked back and enjoyed being together. It’s those in-between moments — the downtime between races, the shared excitement when someone gets a win — that made the day feel complete.
🇺🇸 A Memorial Day to Remember
It was the perfect way to spend Memorial Day weekend — honoring the day with American tradition: racing, friends, family, and freedom. The red, white, and blue flags flying above the strip reminded us why we get to enjoy weekends like this in the first place.
🏁 Final Thoughts
Between the racing action, Ryker’s wide-eyed wonder, and the quality time with friends, this day at the Benton drag strip was one for the books. We left with sun-kissed faces, and hearts full of memories.
Until next time… start your engines.

Walt Disney World Orlando FL Blog

Hey everyone, welcome back to today’s adventure! We’re going to talk about our trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, which we visited in the summer of 2022. If you’re considering a visit to this magical kingdom, I highly recommend reconsidering going in June or July. We traveled during the peak of summer and, frankly, it wasn’t the best choice. We happened to hit one of the hottest weeks of the year, with temperatures on the asphalt reaching between 120 and 130°F in the direct sun during the middle of the day. Needless to say, the heat was intense.
If you do decide to risk it and visit Disney in the summer, just make sure to stay hydrated and get indoors or in the shade as much as possible. While at Walt Disney World, we visited the parks, but I must say that summer is very busy, so if you’re looking for a more relaxing experience, I wouldn’t recommend visiting during this time.
We flew Allegiant Air from Belleville, Illinois, to Orlando Sanford Airport. This trip had its share of challenges and valuable lessons, particularly regarding Allegiant’s flight destinations. They land at both Orlando International Airport and Sanford International Airport, and unfortunately, we landed at Sanford while our rental car was at Orlando International. The two locations are about an hour apart, resulting in a very expensive taxi ride. It was also quite a harrowing experience because our driver was a bit reckless!
When we arrived, we discovered a meticulously decorated Christmas-themed mini golf area in a neighboring town on our way to the Airbnb. Naturally, we had to stop, as we make it a point to play mini golf on every trip. It's one of our cherished traditions, regardless of where we are. We always dedicate one night to mini golf, and since Christmas is my favorite time of year, this was a little slice of heaven for me. The course was designed to resemble a sandy beach during Christmas.
We stayed in an Airbnb just off the property, which was a more budget-friendly option compared to staying in the park. We were only five minutes from Walt Disney World. We will link the Airbnb in the bottom of the blog.

On our first day, we visited Magic Kingdom. We arrived early, and although it was packed, it was exciting to see everything coming together as we walked down Main Street, U.S.A. We paid for Genie+ service to skip the lines during our visit. While at Magic Kingdom, we rode Pirates of the Caribbean, where we got stuck for about 30 to 45 minutes as the ride unexpectedly closed. We also went through the popular Haunted Mansion attraction, which is filled with ghosts and ghouls. We took photos in front of the castle, and as it began to rain, most people headed inside, but we stayed out. Honestly, having the street nearly to ourselves was one of the best parts of our visit to Magic Kingdom. While we were in Magic Kingdom, we went to this 50 themed restaurant and it was absolutely amazing and so cool. The details were impeccable, while we were there it was also the flower festival so they made all kinds of sculptures out of flowers. It was impeccable.
However, our day took a turn when we went to lunch at Tony's Town Square Restaurant. I ordered a salad that included cherry vinaigrette, and despite informing the server about my cherry allergy and discussing my dietary restrictions for about 30 minutes, I was still served cherries in my meal. This caused an allergic reaction, and I had to rush to the medical tent as I struggled to breathe and felt my throat closing up. The only thing they had was children's Benadryl, so I took a hefty dose to manage the reaction. Dustin had to help me back to the car, and once I was in the car, I passed out cold. The rest of the night was spent in our hotel room, where I tried to recuperate; it definitely put a damper on the rest of the week since I was still feeling unwell.
On day two, we visited Hollywood Studios. Although I wasn’t in the best shape, I pushed through because we mainly wanted to experience the Star Wars attraction for Dustin. Let me tell you, the Star Wars attraction did not disappoint! The attention to detail was incredible, from the large structures to the concrete, with references from the movies and characters everywhere you looked. If you’re a Star Wars fan, I absolutely recommend visiting this attraction. Dustin rode the Millennium Falcon and loved it; he said it was as exhilarating as everyone claimed it would be. We also enjoyed the Alien Swirling Saucers and had a great time in Toy Story Land. We’re definitely nerds when it comes to the movies we grew up with! While in Toy Story Land, we also enjoyed Toy Story Mania, and I have to say, I really love a good water ride.
On our third day, we visited Animal Kingdom, but we didn’t get to see much because I was still struggling to feel better after my allergic reaction. I was groggy from the Benadryl I had to keep taking. After Animal Kingdom, we headed to Epcot. We only had one day planned for Epcot, and we wanted to do as much as possible. Unfortunately, the day we visited was one of the hottest of the entire week, which hindered some of our plans. We didn’t get to drink around the world because we wanted to avoid dehydration, so we explored the various ethnicities, cuisines, and drinks available.
Our Disney trip didn’t go as we had hoped; it was quite a rocky experience for our first trip together. However, we still created some wonderful memories during this trip that we will cherish forever.

Orlando FL Blog

Hey everyone, welcome back to our adventure! Today, we’re talking about our road trip. We started our journey in Orlando after our time at Disney World. Our destination was Clearwater, Florida, to visit my family. We took I-4 all the way over from Orlando. If you’ve ever been to Florida or on I-4, also known as the parking lot, you know it can be crazy! There are terrible drivers, accidents, and stop-and-go traffic from Orlando to Tampa. We learned this the hard way—our two-hour drive turned into almost four hours because we were stuck in traffic for at least two hours.
When we finally made it to Clearwater, we checked into another Airbnb. I’ll link it below. It was a nice single-bed studio room just minutes from the beach. They had some interesting rules about parking when we were there. They wanted to know any car that was going to be on the lot, so if you have people coming to stay with you or see you, you have to let them know.
Airbnb: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/32697163?source_impression_id=p3_1747068358_P3YHrG0cXfBWNTYw
Other than that, our stay was very nice. We were able to see my sister, who tagged along with us. We made our way down the coastal line of Florida. We started at Clearwater Beach, then went to Pier 60 and walked to the pier. It was a beautiful day—nice, bright, and sunny. The beach was busy because it was summertime, so there were a lot of people there. We even saw one of the biggest shells we’ve ever seen on top of the pier! I tried to get Dustin to go down into the water and get it for me, but he wouldn’t. We could see it from the top of the pier looking down into the water!
After Pier 60, we drove down to Meridian Beach. While we were there, we stopped at Candy Kitchen. If you’re not familiar with the area, Candy Kitchen is a little candy store across from the beach. They have all kinds of different candies, ice cream, and goodies available there. This is a place that I used to go to frequently when I was in high school. They have some of the best ice cream around! Our next stop on our road trip was Treasure Island. We simply walked along the beach, marveling at the crystal-clear water and the white sands.
Saint Pete Beach holds a special place in my family’s heart. It’s where my mom is buried, and it’s also where she would love to be if she were still alive. The beach is an ideal spot for sea shelling. If you’re looking for seashells and an abundance, this is the place to go. They’ve moved rocks to the left side of the beach, making it a bit harder to get down to the actual shelling area, but that doesn’t deter people. Just be careful because it’s slippery, especially when the tide is up.
We crossed the Skyway Bridge and made our way to Bradenton Beach, our final stop before returning to Clearwater. If you know me, you know where my favorite restaurant is: The Beach House. If you haven’t been there, it’s worth it. It’s the best food you’ll ever have. You can sit inside or outside, and we usually sit on the patio, where you can smell the salt water, feel the wind on your face, and hear the seagulls chirping. It’s the perfect ambiance for a perfect dinner.
After that, we made our way back to Clearwater and spent the rest of the trip hanging out with my sister. This is our final destination before we head back to Illinois.
Thanks for tagging along on our camping journey! We can’t wait to share more stories with you all. Until next time!

Clearwater, St. Pete, Fort Desoto, Tampa, Destin Blog

Hey everyone! Our latest adventure took us back to Clearwater, Florida, where we spent a week filled with mixed emotions. While this trip wasn't exactly a celebration, it was one of profound significance as we spread my mom’s ashes in her favorite spot. We embarked on our journey from Illinois to Florida, making the long drive without stopping for too long. We did take a break at a Cracker Barrel for a few hours, hoping for a comforting meal to recharge. Unfortunately, the breakfast we had was disappointing—definitely the worst we've ever experienced at a Cracker Barrel! We had to order takeout since we had our dog with us, and we ended up eating in the parking lot, trying to make the best of it.
Back on the road, we filled the car with our favorite tunes and shared stories, reminiscing about wonderful memories and cherishing our time together. We stayed in a lovely Airbnb, which I’ll link below. It was a fantastic place with a screened-in pool, a pool table, and an inviting outdoor patio. The fact that we could bring our dogs along made it feel even more like a family getaway. I absolutely recommend this Airbnb!
Of course, during our trip, we visited my mom’s favorite spot—St. Pete Beach. My entire family joined us for the weekend, adding warmth to a bittersweet occasion. Unfortunately, we faced some inclement weather, with a strong storm rolling through, which slightly altered our plans. Nonetheless, we managed to enjoy precious family time on the beach. After our visit to St. Pete, we headed to a charming local diner for breakfast- and then made our way to the picturesque streets of Tarpon Springs. It was here that we all decided to get matching tattoos in memory of my mom, a beautiful gesture that brought us closer together.
After a few days in Clearwater and St. Pete, we ventured to Fort De Soto Beach, bringing our dogs along for the fun. It was their first experience at a dog park, and we were eager yet uncertain about what to expect. The dog beach was stunning, featuring beautiful views and plenty of space for the dogs to run free—provided they returned when called! The only drawback was the busy atmosphere, filled with other dogs and distractions. If your pets aren't the most social, this beach might not be the best choice, especially during the bustling summer months. Still, it was a gorgeous place for our dogs to play and for us to relax.
Another highlight of our adventure was a night out in downtown Tampa, where we joined family to a delightful dinner. The food was exceptional, and I would wholeheartedly recommend the restaurant we chose.
https://harpoonharryscrabhousetampa.com
After Clearwater and St. Pete, we made our way north to Gainesville, where we stopped at the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing. This was an experience we both thoroughly enjoyed. The museum is packed with incredible memorabilia and fascinating information, and we even brought our dogs along. There was so much to see that we could easily have lost track of time.
Once we left the museum, we headed to Destin, Florida, where we would be staying for the next week. This was a new destination for me, although my travel companion had been before. We settled into another Airbnb in Destin, which, while decent inside, had some drawbacks outside. The condo complex was somewhat marred by the smell of marijuana wafting through the area, which was bothersome to us non-smokers. Additionally, the lack of convenient places for the dogs to relieve themselves required us to take them on walks each time they needed to go, which was less than ideal. However, the inside of the apartment was charming and well-maintained, making it suitable for a short stay. If you're just looking for a quick getaway, it could work well, especially given its central location.
Since we visited in February, Destin felt like a ghost town—most places closed by 8 PM. But this trip was meant for relaxation, so we took the opportunity to explore the gorgeous Gulf Islands National Seashore - Okaloosa Area national shoreline for the first time, and it did not disappoint. We also enjoyed long walks on Destin Beach, taking in the stunning white sands and crystal-clear blue waters—some of the most breathtaking beaches I have ever seen. If you’re staying in Destin, there’s a must-visit breakfast spot you need to check out: Crackings. This breakfast joint was by far the best we experienced on any vacation. Not only are their portion sizes enormous, but their food is also delicious, and the service is impeccable.
Destin was our last vacation spot until we headed back to Illinois. Thanks for tagging along on our camping journey! We can’t wait to share more stories with you all. Until next time!
Safe travels,

Bowling Green KY

Exploring Bowling Green, KY: Corvettes, History & Hidden Gems
Bowling Green, Kentucky might not be the first place that comes to mind when you’re planning a road trip, but trust me—this city packs a punch with its unique blend of Americana, history, and Southern charm.
First Stop: The National Corvette Museum
If you're a car enthusiast (or even mildly curious), the National Corvette Museum is a must-see. This place is more than a tribute to an iconic car—it's a walk through automotive history. From rare models to the famous sinkhole exhibit, it’s the kind of place that’ll surprise you with how much there is to learn and enjoy. Whether you're snapping pics next to a '63 Sting Ray or marveling at the high-tech exhibits, it's hard not to get swept up in the legacy of the Corvette.
Stepping Back in Time: Fort Webb Park & Civil War Earthworks
For a change of pace, we visited Fort Webb Park, a quiet and reflective spot nestled just a short drive from downtown. The preserved Civil War earthworks offer a tangible connection to history. There are no flashy signs or guided tours—just peaceful trails, shaded groves, and time to imagine what life was like during that turbulent era. If you're into low-key historic stops, this is the kind of place that stays with you.
Staying the Night: Home2 Suites by Hilton – Bowling Green
Our base for the week was the Home2 Suites by Hilton. If you're traveling with pets, this place is a solid choice—super pet-friendly without feeling like you’re sacrificing comfort or cleanliness. The rooms are modern, clean, and spacious enough to stretch out after a day of sightseeing. The front desk staff were friendly and welcoming, which always sets the tone.
That said, breakfast left a bit to be desired. If you're expecting a hot, hearty start to your day, you might want to look elsewhere or plan to eat out. But for everything else—location, service, pet accommodations—this hotel hits the mark.
Dinner Highlight: Montana Grille
Dinner at Montana Grille was easily one of the standout moments of the trip. From the moment we walked in, the cozy lodge-style ambiance and welcoming staff set the tone. And the food? Outstanding. Perfectly grilled steaks, Southern-inspired sides, and flavors that hit home without feeling heavy or overdone. If you're in Bowling Green, don't miss this place.
Wrapping Up: Secluded Airbnb Stay in Mt. Vernon, IL
On the way home, we broke up the drive with a stay in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, at a peaceful Airbnb tucked away in a secluded spot just outside of town. It was the ideal way to unwind—quiet, clean, and thoughtfully stocked with everything we needed. The host was responsive but gave us plenty of privacy, and the surrounding area was perfect for a morning walk before hitting the road again.
---
Final Thoughts
Bowling Green proved to be the perfect blend of history, culture, and comfort, especially when paired with a relaxing stopover in Mt. Vernon. Whether you’re into vintage cars, Civil War history, or just great food and a good night’s sleep, this route offers a refreshing mix of experiences.
Thanks for tagging along on our journey! We can’t wait to share more stories with you all. Until next time!

Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge & Sevierville, TN 2023

Trip One: A Smoky Mountain Getaway – Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge & Sevierville, TN
The Smokies never disappoint — and our recent trip to Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Sevierville proved just that. With Blu, Baylor, and Oakley in tow (our adventurous crew of pups), we set out for a few days of fresh air, history, good food, and family fun. And wow, this trip delivered.
---
Into the Wild: Great Smoky Mountains National Park & Cades Cove
There’s something timeless about the Great Smoky Mountains National Park — a place where the fog rests like a soft blanket over the peaks, and nature seems untouched by the chaos of modern life. One of our absolute favorite spots was Cades Cove, a scenic valley ringed by mountains and filled with wildlife, history, and breathtaking views.
We took our time driving the Cades Cove loop, stopping to explore trails and historic buildings along the way. The real highlight? A stop at the Primitive Baptist Church and Cemetery, nestled quietly among the trees. The gravestones here date all the way back to the early 1800s, some weather-worn and moss-covered, yet deeply moving. Standing among those markers gave us a powerful sense of the generations who once called this valley home.
And yes — in true Smoky Mountain fashion, we had a surprise wildlife encounter: a coyote, alert and watchful, paused just off the road near a wooded clearing. He gave us a long look before silently vanishing into the trees. It was equal parts eerie and awe-inspiring.
---
Where We Ate: Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen – Southern Comfort Done Right
After a day of exploring and hiking, we were more than ready for some good Southern cooking, and Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen in Pigeon Forge hit the spot. The food here is served family-style, so come hungry — we’re talking fried chicken that melts in your mouth, creamy mashed potatoes, green beans cooked the way grandma used to, and those famous biscuits you’ll dream about long after the trip ends.
It’s comfort food at its best: warm, filling, and served with a smile. Definitely one of the top meals of the trip!
---
Fun & Games: Crave Mini Golf
No Smoky Mountain trip is complete without some classic tourist fun, and Crave Mini Golf in Pigeon Forge brought out the kid in all of us. With colorful candy-themed décor, both indoor and rooftop courses, and fun challenges, it’s perfect for families, couples, or anyone just wanting to laugh and compete. The dogs didn’t join us for this one, but the humans had a blast.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Perfect Mountain Getaway for Family & Dogs!
We had an amazing stay at this secluded mountain home! The location is peaceful, private, and surrounded by nature — exactly what we were looking for to relax and unwind. There was plenty of space for our family, and even more importantly, room for our dogs to stretch out and explore safely. Blu, Baylor, and Oakley absolutely loved it!
The house was clean, well-stocked, and incredibly comfortable, with cozy furniture and beautiful views from the deck. We spent mornings drinking coffee while listening to the birds and evenings gathered on the back patio. It felt like a true escape, but still within driving distance of everything we needed.
The host was responsive and thoughtful, making sure we had everything for a great stay. If you're looking for a quiet, pet-friendly retreat with room to breathe, this is it. We’ll definitely be coming back!

Final Thoughts
This trip was the perfect blend of nature, history, food, and fun — made even better by having Blu, Baylor, and Oakley along for the ride. From the peaceful hush of Cades Cove to the laughter at mini golf and the hearty Southern meals that fueled us in between, Trip One reminded us why this part of Tennessee holds such a special place in our hearts.
If you're planning a Smoky Mountain escape, don’t skip:
* Cades Cove for history and wildlife
* Paula Deen’s for unforgettable comfort food
* Crave Mini Golf for some carefree fun
Until next time, Smokies — we’ll be back.

Springfield IL
History & Hiccups: Visiting Springfield, Illinois
Springfield, Illinois, is often billed as the heart of Lincoln Country—a city rich in presidential history and a must-visit for those fascinated by the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln. So, with high expectations and a camera in hand, we made the trip. While the historical sites delivered in many ways, the overall experience was a bit of a mixed bag.
---
A Powerful Look Into Lincoln’s Life
We started our visit at the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, managed by the National Park Service. This was easily the highlight of the trip. The street is frozen in time—a beautifully preserved neighborhood that lets you walk where Lincoln walked, quite literally.
The guided tour through Lincoln’s home was informative and respectfully done. You can really feel the weight of history in the simple wood floors and modest furnishings. It’s a glimpse into the man before the presidency: a family man, a neighbor, and a lawyer trying to make a difference.
From there, we headed to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. Visually, it’s impressive—modern exhibits, wax figures, immersive storytelling. The museum does a great job of engaging visitors of all ages. It’s clear a lot of thought and investment went into bringing Lincoln’s story to life, and for that, it deserves credit.
---
The City Itself: A Disappointing Contrast
Unfortunately, once you step outside the museum and historical site boundaries, the experience changes. Springfield itself felt surprisingly rundown. Streets and sidewalks near the historic district were littered with trash, and we encountered several areas that were poorly maintained or simply neglected.
It’s hard not to notice the contrast between the care given to Lincoln’s legacy and the lack of attention to the city around it. Springfield has so much potential as a historical destination, but the lack of cleanliness, visible homelessness, and general sense of neglect made parts of the visit feel uncomfortable and, frankly, disappointing.
As visitors hoping to feel inspired and connected to history, we left wishing the city as a whole reflected the same pride and respect as its museums and monuments.
---
Final Thoughts
Would we recommend visiting Springfield? Yes—for the Lincoln sites. They are thoughtfully preserved and genuinely moving. But be prepared for a city that doesn’t quite live up to the power of its history. With more attention to cleanliness, public spaces, and welcoming infrastructure, Springfield could be a top-tier historical destination. As it stands, it feels like a city with a rich past still searching for a present that matches.
---
Have you visited Springfield recently? I’d love to hear your experience—whether it echoed ours or offered a different perspective. Sometimes, travel is a mix of awe and honesty—and that’s okay, too.

Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge, TN 2024

Trip Two: A Smoky Mountain Anniversary to Remember – Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge, TN
Our second trip back to the Smoky Mountains was extra special — this time, we were celebrating our one-year wedding anniversary. There's just something about the mix of mountains, moonshine, and mini golf that makes this area the perfect blend of romantic and fun. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge never disappoint, and this trip was packed with unforgettable memories, laughter, and a few (okay, a lot) of sips of Tennessee’s finest.
---
Ripley’s Aquarium: Under the Sea, Above Expectations
We kicked things off in Gatlinburg with a visit to Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies, and let’s just say—it’s not just for kids. This place is incredibly well-done, with beautiful, immersive exhibits and a peaceful tunnel walk beneath massive sharks, stingrays, and sea turtles. It was the perfect way to start our trip: relaxing, fun, and surprisingly romantic walking hand-in-hand under glowing blue lights.
---
Cheers to One Year: Sugarlands & Ole Smoky Moonshine
Anniversaries call for toasts, and in Gatlinburg, that means moonshine tastings. First up: Sugarlands Distilling Co., where the tasting was not only generous, but hilarious. The bartenders here know how to put on a show, and we sampled everything from Appalachian Apple Pie to Butter Pecan.
Right down the road, we stopped at Ole Smoky Moonshine, the original hotspot for sampling bold flavors like White Lightning and Mountain Java. Between the live music and lively crowd, this was the perfect place to keep the celebration going. We may or may not have left with a couple jars “for the road” (safely packed, of course).
---
Up, Up, and Away: SkyLift, SkyBridge & Tulip Tower
For the best views in Gatlinburg, we headed up the Gatlinburg SkyLift to the famous SkyBridge — North America’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge. Walking across the glass panels in the center was equal parts terrifying and exhilarating, and the panoramic mountain views? Unreal.
We climbed to the top of the Tulip Tower, a scenic overlook along the SkyTrail, and just stood there soaking it in — crisp mountain air, endless green hills, and a quiet moment to be grateful for a year of marriage and adventure.
---
Sweet Treat: Froyo at SweetFrog
After coming back down to earth, we made a pit stop at SweetFrog Frozen Yogurt for a well-deserved treat. Simple, sweet, and satisfying. It’s hard to beat a froyo sundae on a warm Smoky Mountain evening — especially when you get to customize every bite.
---
Mini Golf Magic: Sky Pirates of Mermaid Bay
Our final night featured one of the most unexpectedly epic parts of the trip: Sky Pirates of Mermaid Bay, a glow-in-the-dark, pirate- and mermaid-themed mini golf adventure in Pigeon Forge. Let’s just say — we got way too competitive, laughed way too hard, and maybe got lost in the story a little more than we should have.
Between the immersive sets, quirky characters, and glowing underwater vibes, it was pure fun from start to finish. A perfect way to close out our anniversary trip on a high note.
---
Final Thoughts: One Year Down, Forever to Go
This trip reminded us why we love coming back to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. There's a little something for everyone — romance, ridiculous fun, beautiful views, and memories you’ll talk about long after you unpack. Whether you're newlyweds or long-timers, there's no better place to celebrate love, laughter, and life than in the heart of the Smokies.
Here’s to year one — and to many more anniversaries full of adventure.

Food in Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge, TN
Smoky Mountain Bites: Must-Eat Food Spots in Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge, TN
Whether you're here for the hikes, the moonshine, or the mountain views — one thing is certain: you won’t go hungry in the Smoky Mountains. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are packed with unique, delicious, and downright comforting food options that make every meal part of the adventure. From Southern staples to unexpected favorites, here are a few must-eat spots you shouldn't miss on your next visit.
---
🍴 1. Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen – Pigeon Forge
Let’s start big — because no one does Southern comfort food quite like Paula Deen. Located in The Island at Pigeon Forge, Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen serves all-you-can-eat family-style meals loaded with buttery, crispy, deep-fried goodness.
You don’t order individual dishes here — you choose a few entrees and sides for the table, and they just keep them coming. Fan favorites include:
* Southern Fried Chicken (crispy, juicy perfection)
* Beef Pot Roast
* Creamed Potatoes
* Mac & Cheese (trust us on this one)
And yes, the Ooey Gooey Butter Cake lives up to its name. Come hungry. Leave happy. Possibly in a food coma.
---
🍔 2. Cook Out – Pigeon Forge
Sometimes the best food isn’t fancy — it’s fast, greasy, and hits the spot. If you haven’t tried Cook Out, now’s the time. This Southern fast-food chain is known for serving insanely affordable trays that include a main item, two sides, and a drink (which can be a milkshake, by the way).
Grab a Cook Out Tray with a burger, hushpuppies, and chicken nuggets, or go classic with a chili dog and fries. Don’t skip the milkshakes — they have over 40 flavors, from banana pudding to peanut butter fudge.
Late night? Tight budget? Craving something fast and fried? Cook Out delivers.
---
🍩 3. The Donut Friar – Gatlinburg
Tucked into The Village Shops in downtown Gatlinburg, The Donut Friar is a hidden gem that’s been around since the '60s. As soon as you step inside, you’ll smell the magic: fresh-baked donuts, cinnamon bread, and pastries that taste like they came straight from grandma’s kitchen.
The donuts are classic — no gimmicks, just perfectly fried, lightly glazed, melt-in-your-mouth perfection. Pair it with a hot cappuccino or espresso, and you’ve got the perfect start (or end) to a day in the mountains.
Tip: Get there early. Locals and visitors know this place is the real deal.
---
🥪 4. Publix Sub Sandwiches – Quick, Easy, and Shockingly Good
Okay, hear us out: a grocery store sub? Really? Yes. Really.
If you’re staying in a cabin or on the go and need a quick, delicious meal without the tourist crowds, swing by Publix in nearby Sevierville and grab one of their famous “Pub Subs.”
Made fresh to order, these sandwiches are piled high with meats, cheeses, and toppings. The chicken tender sub is a fan favorite (add buffalo sauce for extra kick), but honestly, you can’t go wrong. They’re huge, affordable, and perfect to take on a hike, picnic, or back to your rental.
---
🏞️ Bonus Tip: Picnic with a View
Grab takeout or pack your Publix sub and head to a scenic spot like Cades Cove, Metcalf Bottoms, or Newfound Gap for a mountain-side picnic. Nothing makes food taste better than fresh air, cooler temps, and a Smoky Mountain backdrop.
---
Final Bites
There’s no shortage of great eats in the Smokies, but these are some of the tried-and-true favorites we keep coming back to. Whether you’re here for Southern hospitality, cheap comfort food, or a quiet breakfast tucked in the mountains, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge deliver the goods.

Rend Lake IL

Chilly Nights & Cozy Vibes: October Camping at Rend Lake, IL
There’s something special about camping in the fall — the crisp air, the smell of campfires, and the sound of leaves crunching under your boots. Our trip to Rend Lake, Illinois this past October delivered all of that and more… including some seriously cold nights. But thanks to a little planning (and a lot of heated blankets), it turned into one of our most memorable getaways yet.
---
🚙 The Rig: 1999 Tahoe + DIY Camper Conversion
Our journey began with our reliable '99 Chevy Tahoe leading the way, pulling an converted trailer camper—a labor of love that’s become little home on wheels. Simple, sturdy, and functional, the camper has everything we need for a weekend off the grid: a cozy bed setup, storage, and just enough space to stretch out after a long day exploring.
Towing with the Tahoe is a breeze, It’s freedom in its purest form.
---
🏕️ Camp Life at Rend Lake
We set up camp at Rend Lake, one of southern Illinois’ best-kept secrets when it comes to lakeside camping. The trees were just starting to change color, and the campground was peaceful — not too crowded, but full enough to feel friendly. You could hear the occasional crackle of nearby campfires and the distant calls of geese flying over the lake.
Days were cool and perfect for hiking along the water, snapping photos of fiery red and orange leaves, and breathing in that clean, earthy autumn air. But once the sun dipped below the horizon, the temperature followed quickly.
---
❄️ Cold Nights, Warm Blankets
Let’s be honest — October camping in the Midwest is no joke. Nights got cold. Not “grab an extra hoodie” cold… more like “why did we think this was a good idea?” cold. Thankfully, we came prepared.
Inside our camper, we had one key ingredient to survival: heated blankets. Absolute game-changer. we layered up and let the warm coziness take over. The sound of the wind outside, paired with the hum of the heater and our blankets keeping us toasty, made for some surprisingly restful nights. There’s something magical about being warm and comfortable while the cold nips at the camper walls.
Coffee in the morning? Life-giving. Wrapped in hoodies and flannels, we sipped hot mugs by the fire pit while the fog lifted off the lake. That’s the kind of peace you don’t find in city life.
---
🌲 Why We’ll Do It Again
Cold and all, this trip reminded us why we love camping — especially in the off-season. Fewer crowds, better views, and a real sense of calm that you just can’t find in the summer rush. Rend Lake offered the perfect mix of nature and quiet, and our trusty setup (thanks, Tahoe and blankets) kept us comfortable the whole way through.
---
🔥 Tips for Cold-Weather Camping:
* Heated blankets = must-have if you have electric hookup
* Bring extra layers, gloves, and wool socks
* Thermoses for hot drinks will keep spirits high
* Don’t skip firewood — campfires become your main hangout spot
* Fall foliage is at its peak in October — bring a camera!
---
Whether you're a seasoned camper or just starting your DIY journey, Rend Lake in the fall is absolutely worth the visit. Cold? Yes. But totally worth it for the peaceful vibe, quiet trails, and memories made under a canopy of changing leaves.
Until next time — stay warm, stay wild, and keep exploring.
